Ethics Behind Self-Driving Cars

The Question

If an object fell off of another vehicle and a self-driving car couldn't break on time and was blocked in on both sides by an SUV and a motorcycle how should the car be programmed to react?
Should it...

A. Swerve into an SUV
B. Continue on and hit the object flying off
C. Swerve into the other lane and hit a motorcyclist

My Thoughts

The car should be programmed to stay its course and hit the object even to the detriment of the driver. When examining a dilemma like this there are many things to consider such as
  1. Personal vs Company considerations
  2. Unknowable variables (Such as whether or not the motorcyclist has a helmet on or if the SUV has kids inside)
  3. Moral obligations vs practicality
  4. Consent to the risk of self-driving vehicles
The reason the car should be programmed to hit the object mainly falls under the fourth factor. The other vehicles and people on the road did not agree with the risks that the new technology of self-driving cars creates. The only person who accepted that risk was the person who bought the car, therefore they should be the one to take the fall if the technology fails.

Further Questions to Explore

If the car swerves into another vehicle is the driver in the car or the programmer liable for the crash?
